Everett Mayor Declares Support for Comcast Arena but Says Investments Must Show Returns

Mayor Stephanson says Comcast Arena at Everett still has a bright future.

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson today attended the monthly meeting of the Everett Public Facilities District. It’s the first PFD board meeting he’s been to in some time and he told the board he wanted to express his support and gratitude for the job they were doing. He also outlined what he believes the events center needs to do to stay out of the financial trouble that facilities like the one in Wenatchee have faced. “We need to have as few “dark” nights as possible,” said Stephanson. “We need to get down in the trenches, go after business, pull out every attraction, we could even accommodate another pro sports team.” Stephanson acknowledged that in addition to increased competition by other venues, a major challenge for Comcast Arena at Everett was a lack of dedicated parking. “We are working on that as part of Act 2 for the events center,” said Stephanson. “The investments we make will have to be well thought out and pencil a return on investment.”

The Mayor went on to say that Everett was in a much better position than many other cities across the country and even in the state but the economics of Everett are at a new base line. Where several years ago city revenues were at 120 – 125 million, Everett’s revenue is now running between 110 – 111 million. The mayor concluded his comments by noting that Comcast Arena at Everett and other venues in downtown were all helping to build job retention, attract new companies and support of all of them is in the City of Everett’s economic self-interest.

Skating and Shots

Free Flu and Whooping Cough shots plus ice skating on January 26th

Comcast Arena at Everett has announced an unusual partnership offering an afternoon of free ice skating and flu shots. Here are the details…

The Comcast Arena is putting flu season on ice.

On Saturday, January 26, the Comcast Arena will host a free public skate and vaccination clinic to serve uninsured and low-income adults in the Snohomish County area. Volunteers from the Medical Reserve Corp and staff from the Snohomish County Health District will help distribute 300 doses of the adult flu vaccine and 300 doses of the whooping-cough vaccine.

Guests of the event will skate on the arena’s main ice rink, the same rink that the Everett Silvertips play on for all their home games.

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club sought and received a district matching Rotary Club International grant to help host the clinic. The local Rotary club is partnering with the Snohomish Health District, Verdant Health Commission and Global Spectrum to promote the free vaccination clinic and skate session.

With flu season in Snohomish County proving to be more severe than usual, getting a current flu shot is the best way to prevent infection.

Vaccination is also the best protection against whooping-cough. It is especially important that all pregnant women and people – including teens – who are around newborns get the booster shot to protect the infant.

Download vaccine information sheets and consent forms in English and Spanish at www.snohd.org.

Visit www.flu.gov for more information about flu, and www.doh.wa.gov for statewide updates.

Washington Stealth

The Washington Stealth kick off their 4th season in Everett Saturday night at Comcast Arena.

Washington Stealth Lacrosse opens its 3rd season in Everett Saturday night in Comcast Arena at Everett. The Stealth had a great opening season in 2010 and did well in 2011 but had a much tougher season last year. This year’s tag line, “Like Hockey with Balls” is causing a bit of attention but Stealth loyalists say it’s the fastest way to explain how lacrosse games work to people who haven’t seen one yet. Tickets are on sale at the Comcast Arena box office or by calling 425-374-7290. Here’s a preview from the team’s website

EVERETT, Wash. – After a pre-season of bolstering a veteran lineup that has enjoyed NLL championship game appearances in two of the past three seasons, the Washington Stealth are poised to make a run back to the top of the NLL as the team faces the defending champion Rochester Knighthawks in the season opener, Saturday at Everett’s Comcast Arena. Game time is 6:45 p.m.

Bigger, faster and stronger, coach Chris Hall’s squad is teed-up to turn the page in 2013 and make a run at the post season. A run that begins with the defending league champions, which have dominated the all-time series against the Stealth 11-4 dating back to the organization’s time in both San Jose, Calif. and Albany, N.Y.

For Hall, the Stealth’s success in the coming year — and Saturday night’s opener, will rely heavily on the output of his veteran forwards Lewis Ratcliff, Rhys Duch and Athan Iannucci, along with a retooled defensive unit.

As two of the most potent threats for the Stealth, Ratcliff and Duch accounted for two thirds of the offense in last February’s meeting with Rochester in New York, which the Stealth dropped 15 – 12 after giving up a slim lead in the fourth.

“There is a lot less taken for granted this year,” said Ratcliff, who despite finishing 2012 with a team best and seventh ranked league wide 36 goals to go along with 40 assists, wasn’t satisfied with the finish.

“Last year showed us how tough the league is,” said Ratcliff. “There is a new hunger and attitude in working our way back to the top.”
