Everett, Everett Fire

A Fire Watch had been imposed on the building at 101 E. Marine View Drive in Everett but the person who was supposed to be on watch had left the area according to Everett Fire Officials. Here’s the latest in a press release put out this afternoon by the City of Everett…

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Everett firefighters Monday continued to monitor the site of a massive Saturday night fire for potential flare-ups as investigators worked to determine the cause of the blaze.

“There are some areas still smoldering, so we are closely monitoring the entire site,” said Fire Marshal Eric Hicks. “We expect to remain on scene at least through Tuesday morning.”

Hicks said the fire department had been out to the site twice last week to respond to small fires. That’s when they discovered large piles of wood-derived products being stored inside the building, which previously housed a recycling business.

“Like compost, the materials being stored inside the building are self-heating, which makes them a fire hazard,” said Hicks. “After the first fire last Wednesday, we notified the business owner that they needed to come up with a plan to move the materials out of the building.”

The fire department had begun working with the business owner to help them understand the potential risks and to implement interim fire-safety measures when a second small fire broke out Friday.

The second fire destroyed a portion of the building’s sprinkler system. Because of the increased risk, the fire marshal notified the business owner that they needed to institute a temporary “fire watch” in the building.

“With the building under a fire watch, someone must be on site around-the-clock watching for potential fires,” said Hicks. “Unfortunately, the person on fire-watch duty temporarily left the building on Saturday night, and it appears that that’s when the fire broke out.”

The fire remains under investigation and a cause has not yet been determined.
