Is your pet microchipped? This is why it matters…

Here’s one of those feel good stories from the Everett Animal Shelter  (and another good reason to have your pet microchipped)…

When their cat disappeared over Memorial Day weekend in 2012, Sheila Davis and her family posted flyers, drove around their neighborhood and did everything they could to find their beloved pet. But she remained missing for two years, until a good Samaritan brought her to the Everett Animal Shelter last week.

“We were devastated when we couldn’t find her,” said Davis. “She was just a really cool cat. She was so affectionate and loved to be held like a baby.”

Davis adopted the gray-and-black tabby cat, known as “Special K,” from the Everett Animal Shelter in 2008. Shelter staff estimated that she was 1 or 2 years old at the time.

The family was living in Marysville when she went missing, but has since moved to Everett. Last Friday, Special K was reunited with her family after more than two years away.

“Special K was brought in as a stray last week, after she was found by a family in Marysville,” said Shannon Johnson, shelter director. “Like all of our cats and dogs, we’d microchipped her before she was adopted, so we were able to track down her owners. It’s always a great feeling to reunite a family with their pet, but it’s especially incredible after she’d been missing for two years!”

Davis said they’re planning to spoil their long-last cat now that they’ve got her back. “She recognized my daughter right away. We thought she was gone forever and we’re just elated to have her back.”

Special K’s happy ending will count toward the shelter’s goal of finding homes for more than 1,600 cats and dogs this June, July and August.

“We’re trying to break our record for adoptions this summer, as well as reuniting lost pets with their owners,” said Johnson. “We’re in a national competition to win $100,000, which would help us provide spay and neuter services for pets of low-income families, and vaccination clinics in the community.”

The shelter is open until 8 p.m. every Friday this summer for special adoption events: www.everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=2191. Next weekend’s theme is “Wizards,” with a free magic show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.
