Cornel West, self described as “a blues man in the life of the mind, a jazz man in the world of ideas” is coming to Everett Thursday evening to speak on the role of race in education. West’s appearance is sponsored by students at Everett Community College. Here’s how the college describes the program…

Everett Community College is bringing Cornel West, one of the country’s most prominent public intellectuals, to Everett March 6.

West, a lifelong champion for racial justice, will speak at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at the Comcast Arena, 2000 Hewitt Ave, Suite 200. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Admission is free for EvCC students and employees with ID, but a ticket is required. For all other students with ID, tickets are $5. Tickets are available at evcccornelwest.eventbrite.com until March 5.

West’s topic is “Race in Education: Empowering Andragogy in Educational Institutions.” Andragogy are teaching strategies developed for adult learners.

“This special event provides an opportunity for all of us to come together and have open and engaging dialogue around the topic of race and education,” said Jerod Grant, Director of EvCC’s Outreach, Diversity, and Equity Center. “Dr. West will challenge those attending to take a second look at what many may consider the educational norm. We want people leaving the event enlightened and with actionable goals to continue our progression towards an inclusive and equitable society.”

West, a professor at the University of Princeton, is the author of 19 books and editor of 13 more. He’s best known for his books “Race Matters,” “Democracy Matters” and his new memoir “Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud.”

He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in three years and obtained his master’s degree and doctorate in philosophy at Princeton. He has taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale, Harvard and the University of Paris.

He appears frequently on the Bill Maher Show, Colbert Report, CNN and C-Span as well as on Tavis Smiley’s PBS television show.

West’s presentation is part of EvCC’s recognition of Black Legacy Month. The event is sponsored by EvCC’s Student Activities Office, Black Student Union and Outreach, Diversity and Equity Center.
