A non-profit women’s roller derby league? Yep and they’re back in Everett for their 2014 season starting Saturday night. The league is called the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds. There are four home teams who make up the league including the Sugar Skulls, Rolling Blackouts, Saint Hellions, and Royal Crush. Tilted Thunder also has a Junior Derby league called Peeps with girls from age 6 – 17. Here’s a bit more about the league from their website

Tilted Thunder Rail Birds is a Seattle-based, all-female, banked track roller derby league. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run by a volunteer force of skaters and league members committed to promoting and raising awareness of women’s roller derby, especially banked track roller derby. TTRB is comprised of strong, friendly, intelligent, enthusiastic women from all walks of life pursuing emotional growth and physical strength by challenging their perceived limits. As a league, we also wish to promote mental and physical empowerment, development of skills, loyalty on and off the track, individuality, and friendship – throughout the entire sport, both locally and nationally.

Saturday night the doors of Comcast Arena at Everett will open at 4pm and the Peeps will do a demonstration match prior to main matches beginning at 5:00PM with events running until about 9:00pm. Each home bout also features a fund-raiser for non-profits and this weekend the Rail Birds have partnered with Cocoon House to become the featured charity for the March 1st bout. Established in 1991, Cocoon House has been Snohomish County’s only resource exclusively serving homeless and at-risk youth ages 13-17. The non-profit’s mission is to foster personal growth and healthy relationships to strengthen and empower at-risk and homeless youth and their families. Cocoon House provides youth housing and other critical community-based services to youth, caregivers, families and the community. More information on Cocoon House

Collections for items at the event include: gift cards to McDonald’s, Subway, Fred Meyer, Target etc. ($10-$20), boys swim shorts (M, L, XXL, XXXL), girls swim suits (S, M, L, XL), art supplies (drawing, painting, etc. ), new boys socks and boxers, new girls’ underwear, ankle socks for girls and big bottles of shampoo and conditioner.

The event is family friendly and a lot of fun. A great way to spend a Saturday evening in Everett.
