Madison Elementary ELL, Special Education, Hispanic and low-income students are learning especially well. In fact, the school met all federal Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Maintaining student academic achievement growth from one year to the next shows intentional, strategic instruction to meet individual student needs. That kind of work, demonstrated by sustained student success, caught the attention of education analysis at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) in Olympia.
OSPI officials saw that Madison’s student achievement and staff work deserved special recognition and named the school as one of only two Title I schools in Washington state as a National Title I Distinguished School. Students at Madison far exceeded the AMO targets for Special Education and ELL students – even though nearly one-third of the students qualify for ELL. Hispanic students showed strong growth in reading – as did students from low-income families.
The award brings with it the opportunity for representatives of Madison’s staff to take part in the National Title I February conference in San Diego – to share with and learn from other nationally recognized, high achieving school staff.
Madison staff also have access to an online professional development tool where other nationally recognized educators will share ways they have helped all students achieve to high standards.
“A day in the life of … ” Madison students and staff will be among documentation available at the National Title I website, and the school’s demographics and success story will be featured among the other nationally recognized Title I schools.
