The Herald will begin charging for online access.

The Herald newspaper yesterday announced that it will begin charging readers once they’ve read 15 articles in a month’s time. Here’s an excerpt from the notice posted yesterday online at HeraldNet.com.

Once you read five news articles, you’ll get an invitation to buy an introductory digital subscription to HeraldNet. And when you click on your 15th story link, a message will let you know you’ve used up your allotment of free stories for this month.

Starting today, we are asking customers who enjoy and depend on HeraldNet to pay for the content, just as print customers have done since 1901.

The price is modest: Just 99 cents for your first three months. After that, the regular price will be $8.95 per month. If you already subscribe to the print edition of The Daily Herald, your digital subscription is free.

The Herald joins MyEverettNews.com partner The Seattle Times, which has been charging for online access since March of this year.

The cost for the digital subscription to Heraldnet.com is 99 cents for the 1st 3 months and $8.95 a month thereafter. If you subscribe to the print edition of the Herald you get the digital access included at no additional charge.
