Here’s some background on the report provided by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office…

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the Operational Assessment Report of the Snohomish County Correctional Facility provided by the National Institute of Corrections. The report was compiled following a three-day visit by Timothy Ryan, Director of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, and John Ford, Undersheriff of the Davidson County (Tennessee) Sheriff’s Office. Ryan and Ford conducted the review of the jail’s operation under the authority of the NIC, an agency under the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The assessment included a review of the following areas: intake/release, housing, classification, medical, police and procedures, staff training, food services, conditions of conferment, sanitation, inmate services and programs, security, and inmate supervision.

The voluntary review had been requested by then-Sheriff John Lovick last spring and was conducted in late August. An NIC assessment of the medical operations begins by a second review team today. In addition to the NIC assessments, Sheriff Ty Trenary requested an informal review of the jail from Pierce County corrections leadership this summer.

“Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of our corrections staff and inmates,” said Trenary. “The results and recommendations from all three reviews will provide us the opportunity to improve our jail operations and be better informed when looking to make changes to policy and procedure.”
