Local business leader and Everett City Council Member Scott Murphy has announced he will seek election this coming fall to the Everett City Council. Murphy was appointed on January 2, 2013 to fill the remaining term of Position #3, previously held by Councilmember Arlan Hatloe.
Scott and his wife Kippy have three children. Following a successful business career with Safeco Insurance as Vice President of Finance, Scott left in 2008 to accept a position with Goldfinch Bros, Inc. as the company’s Chief Operating Officer. Goldfinch Bros., with business throughout the western United States, is the oldest glass and glazing firm in the northwest dating back to 1892. “We were fortunate to recruit an individual with Scott’s credentials, and were extremely pleased when Scott accepted our offer to help us lead and expand our business,” Greg Goldfinch said, “Scott has excellent business judgment and Everett will benefit from his fiscal leadership and decision making.”
Murphy has a successful record of community service dedicating considerable time to volunteer service, youth activities, and community affairs. He is a Past President of both the North Everett Little League and the Everett Public Schools Foundation, and served as a member of the City’s Vision 2025 task force and as an Everett Planning Commission member since 2010. Currently, Murphy serves on the Greater Everett Community Foundation board.
“I look forward to continuing my public service and am committed to serving the citizens of Everett.” said Murphy. “As a taxpayer and having to balance our personal budget, I understand the importance of maintaining the City’s core services through careful financial management of the city’s resources. Creating employment and achieving economic success by working jointly with other public and private entities provides the right approach to moving our city in a positive direction. As a dad and concerned citizen, I will also work with the Council to make certain we safeguard our neighborhoods, parks, and the overall City by supporting our public safety programs and services.”
Murphy begins his City Council campaign with strong local support, including endorsements from community leaders Rick Cooper, Angie Sievers, Gigi Burke, Jo Metzger-Levin, Bob Dobler, Holly Burkett-Pohland, Richard Anderson, Dan Gunderson and Joe Ennis. He has also received the support of former Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel, Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, and city council member Shannon Affholter.
“I have worked with Scott for many years on Boards and in community activities.” said former Councilmember Gigi Burke. “Scott has common sense. His business experience and financial expertise, successfully managing significant business responsibilities throughout the years, will benefit the City Council and the citizens of Everett.”
Murphy will begin doorbelling this spring. Meantime, he will be attending various neighborhood meetings. “I believe candidates should meet directly with citizens to listen and to learn what is on their minds.” said Murphy. “I’m excited to get out into the community and to introduce myself to people.”
