Access to Everett’s Howarth Park Beach Seriously Restricted Until Summer

The main lower parking lot of Howarth Park is closed for repairs until sometime this summer.

Falling trees and sliding hillsides have seriously affected the ability for people to access one of Everett’s most popular beachfront areas. Everett’s Public Information Director issued the explanation…

Due to dangerous, uprooted trees falling down the hillside, pedestrians and vehicles are prohibited access to the roadway leading to Lower Howarth Park and the parking area at the bottom of the hill until further notice. The City is working as quickly as possible to remedy the situation to open the road in the summer.

The City of Everett closed the road leading to the lower parking lot in January during heavy snows and winter weather due to landslides in the area. City crews are assessing the slide area and have identified about 80 Alder trees along the hillside that are unstable and need to be removed.

While Howarth’s beach area remains open, visitors must access the beach from the park’s upper and middle trails. Unfortunately, about 60 percent of Howarth’s parking spots are in the lower area, less than 30 spots in the upper two lots for visitors to one of the city’s most popular parks. Park Rangers are also reminding people to refrain from parking in areas that are posted “no-parking” or “tow-away zone.” Drivers who decide to park in no-parking and tow-away zone areas will be ticketed for the violation.

Park visitors who want to access the beach may want to consider visiting another park such as the City of Mukilteo Lighthouse Park and Community Beach. Parking is limited. Everett Transit and Community Transit both have stops on the Mukilteo waterfront.
