Washington State Patrol troopers say a 47-year-old man was killed after a car managed to squeeze into the passenger walkway that runs alongside the Hewitt Ave. Trestle. Here’s the description from trooper Keith Leary…

At 1151 hours troopers responded to the scene of a car pedestrian collision on EB SR-2 approximately 3/4 of a mile east of Everett. A 24 year old male from Everett driving a Nissan passenger car traveled across a raised median on the on-ramp to EB SR-2. The car then drove through a raised dirt berm around secured metal pylons and drove on the pedestrian walk way.

A 55 year old female and 47 year old male pedestrian were walking east on the walkway (walkway is separated from actual lanes by concrete barrier), the male walking several feet in front of the female. The female was struck by the right mirror of the car and was not injured. The male was struck and thrown over the side of the trestle due to the impact with the car. The car continued and struck the concrete wall where the walkway turns right toward Ebby Island. The driver suffered significant leg injuries and was transported to Providence Colby Hospital in Everett. Troopers have taken blood from the man as alcohol and or drugs are possibly involved.

The female pedestrian told me they ran out of gas somewhere in Everett and they were walking home to Ebby Island. She tells me the deceased has been a friend of hers for 5 years and live together. Next of kin has not been done but is being attempted shortly. The Everett Fire Department removed the deceased from under the trestle with the assistance of the Snohomish County Medical Examiner. The scene is clearing as I send this email. This is the first time I have seen a vehicle drive on the pedestrian walkway area. This walkway is used daily by pedestrians.

The State Patrol has identified the 47 year old victim as Darren Streeter from Chehalis.
