Everett Police to Begin Internal Review of Fatal Shooting 20 Months After the Fact

February 24, 2011

Everett Government, Police Blotter

At yesterday’s Everett City Council meeting the vote was unanimous, (with Council Members Stonecipher and Gipson absent), to approve a half million dollar settlement with the family of Niles Meservey who was shot by Everett Police Officer Troy Meade in June 2009. Here’s the note I got from Everett public information director Kate Reardon about what happens next…

The Everett City Council today approved a $500,000 settlement with Tanda Louden to resolve the $15 million lawsuit she brought on behalf of herself and Niles Meservey’s estate.

The money for the settlement comes out of the City’s annual budget, which is used to pay claims of this nature up to $1 million. Amounts greater than that are covered by the City’s insurance.

Now that both the civil and criminal cases have concluded, the City will begin the next stage, the Police Department’s internal review to determine whether any Police Department action will be taken regarding the incident. It is not known how long the review will take. Police Officer Troy Meade will remain on paid administrative leave during this review. The City cannot make any further comment regarding this matter until the review is complete.

Cheers!

The City Council also approved a $12,500 payment to settle a $100,000 claim filed by Athena Doolittle who suffered what the city called a “trip and fall incident” on West Marine View drive on July 4th 2006. That case had been in arbitration for some time.
